Biography

Hello...thank you for stopping by...

I am on Hawaii Island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and am surrounded by water. Many of my images have water in them too :) Most of my early morning pictures were taken while walking my buddy boy. A special thank you to all of you that like, comment, share and view my pictures. I'm looking forward to seeing yours too!

A lovely calm to this image, the layers give a great sense of depth and the muted colours a nice moody feeling, but the light and colour of the morning sky, which is also mirrored at the bottom of the image give balance to this beautiful image :)

Fantastic back lit colours. I tried closing and opening my eyes a few times and they went to the same spot every time, the blue clam shell with the green acorn and red orchid. Something to discover every time you look. Nice :)

Very nice, great colours, and I don't just mean in the coats. I don't think it would have improved the image by a move to the right, I think just a little the other way, it would have opened up the reflections a little more. But that is just my opinion. But it's good to think "What if" A very eye catching beautiful image anyone would have been proud to have taken :)

So your not far from the mark.

But seriously, if you posted a photo like that in England all hell would break loose. A famous Tv presenter got herself arrested years ago just for sending a roll of film to the developer of her own children in the bath.

Thank you very much, Marius. Two things I discovered at this exhibit. One was turning off the shutter sound and shooting right behind people and they did not even notice and two the place had a good sized crowd and everyone except me was so glued to each photograph and looked upon them with such interest, awe and intensity that the exhibit hall was more quiet than a library! I came away from the exhibit with a renewed respect and excitement of photography and the effect it has on people when the images tell a story. A wonderful experience for me!

I know where you are coming from Joe, I feel the same way. I never take peoples faces without asking permission, the only exception is if they are performers and they expect to be photographed. If I put people in my photos I do not show their faces if they are dominant in the image ( Like your images "Mom" and "Getting busy") The sign does give the impression of the woman being a specimen.

Thank you, ant_hony! I am as EddieM described out of my comfort zone when it comes to people and street photography, but I do like being in new places even if it's a new place such as out of my normal comfort zone. I also enjoy my nightmares and being completely lost. I took this in Asia and for some reason may be just in my mind it seemed okay without asking.

Thank you very much, socialtruant! There have been times where I felt the need to ask, but this was not one of them. I had walked by this woman twice before with my camera in case and she looked like this. Then when I pointed the camera at her all she did was slightly turn her eyes to me without any other noticeable changes. Reminded me of how a gecko doesn't move a stitch except only its eyes when looking at a fly.

Some images are like that. They have something about them that for the person they contain or the moment caught, they are not for immediate sharing or for sharing without some sensitivity and dignity.

it made me laugh... I know this uncomfortable feeling you get sometimes doing street photography...but people make an image shine...keep at it don't let yourself down and wonderful things will happen...btw. I think it's her normal facial expression...its called "bulldog" face so body language experts say...
          • Joe Lightheart
Thank you very much, Ontologys Dreamscape! I am going to do more street photography. It's exciting. You are absolutely right about her expression as she looked just like this before I had a camera in my hand and was just walking by. I wanted to snap a shot of her sitting here so I went around the corner, got my camera out and came back around the corner and she was still in the same position with the same expression!
            • Ontologys Dreamscape
:) sometimes people will like it if you take photos of them...they dress up for a reason...maybe you should ask them from time to time if you are allowed to make a street portrait...people react surprised and most of the time are really nice...just try and ask...but the great once are shoots of specimen in their undisturbed natural habitat xD

It happens when someone understands you are shooting it. If you want permission, they start asking questions and asking a lot of questions. For me these reactions are an interesting position for taking photos.I like her reaction.

          Joe, I love this.

You obviously feel that this is not your style, but please persevere.

She didn't like the camera being pointed at her but that really makes the image

Scowling at you is perfect. If she was giving you a big smile it wouldn't work.

This is far from being a poor image don't be putting yourself down and keep stepping out of your comfort zone.

Hi Butch - this is the exact opposite of what other folks have said(!) but in this picture I might try playing with the colour of the red leaf slightly (de-saturate or something) to strengthen the subject (which is strong)

Beautiful. Unusual, probably unique church interior. You captured this so well. The balance of the light is great. Weren't the windows were blown out compared to the interior light? Some HDR?

Thank you very much Mark! I specifically came here late in the day because I knew the sun light would be streaming into the church door from behind me. I did not expect the light to be all over the place with extreme highlights and shadows. Yes, this is a 5 variable exposure shot stacked and I guess this would make it an HDR. Thank you very much for looking, commenting and sharing!

I am very sorry, but I am unable to view or respond to any ones pictures. I keep getting very long buffering then a message saying that there is an Internal Server Error then I get booted off the site. This has been happening more and more and never happens on any other site in the world! So very frustrating. I already wrote about this in the Forum months ago. Tom says it's because I am on the other side of the planet from the ClickASnap server. Oh well, better luck next time, and I will keep trying...I guess.

Thanks Mark, it is weird and is clearly a server problem of some sort. When I look at google earth, I can not see England and Hawaii at the same time. I am so far away that when my day is ending their day is just getting started. I am half a world away!

Have you tried using a VPN? Maybe tricking the site into thinking you are in London will help it work.

There is a free one called Tunnelbear that I use from time to time. Works pretty well and doesn't slow the system down very much. I can still steam video with it.

Tom did a blog post asking the BIG question, "Is ClickAsnap worth it?". Well I can tell you that on days when uploads fail, pages won't load fully & submit respose buttons don't work, no it bloody ain't. And don't even get me started on viewing in on any mobile device. I wish more time was spent on getting the basics to work, before trying to make new snazzy features.

Very nice composition, eyes automatically go to the left, then the row of lights lead you through the image to the lookout tower (restaurant) perched on top of the Harbour centre building. The reflections with their pastel colours are great. 60 seconds to take, a lot longer required to appreciate the beauty of this image :)

:) what do you suggest for a trip...New Zealand or Tasmania first
              • Joe Lightheart
I've never been to Tasmania so I can't say, but I highly recommend New Zealand. I stayed at Airbnbs and many times with only hours of prior notice and had zero problems with places to stay. The next time I go I might hire a camper style van and do more camping. There's really good places and apps for locations too. I spent most of my time on the southern island - it's a lot less populated. New Zealand is fantastic, wonderful people great places to hike, etc., etc. Can't go wrong with New Zealand! I also went right after peak season so was better, less crowds, less people and not as expensive.

Nice thanks for the info...we tried to go to the Island by ferry but you cant bring a dog cause of quarantine... it's going to be Norway first now...and I bought new equipment so New Zealand is going to be on hold for a while but I totally looking forward to it :)

The dragonfly shots that I get that come out the best are the ones I take with a camera that I can zoom in on them. Otherwise, they are gone in a second. The other thing is once they are feeding even when they do fly away a majority of the time they will fly right back to the same spot to continue eating. Lastly, I probably would have had the largest collection of empty sticks and reeds on earth if I had kept all the shots I missed. The Nikon P510 is a bridge camera with a 42x zoom and a small sensor so it really pulls in the subject.

It's funny how these small cameras have such impressive zooms. My tiny Song goes from 24mm to 720mm optically. It has a further digital zoom, but I have turned it off.

Good luck. Patience usually pays off. I haven't found any time of day better than the other. Usually around a pond or creek is where I come across most of these. When I visited Niagara Falls I thought "Why not have a little walk over the bridge to the Canadian side" well ... forgot my passport at the hotel and was lucky not to spend the rest of my days on that bridge. No entry to Canada but the US guys have been friendly and let me re-enter :-D.

Wow! The colour of the water is incredible. Well done capturing it the way you have. The clouds add to the whole scene too.

Thank you Denise! This developed into a fast and furious storm. Blew down a tree across the main road and was "trapped" until two other guys showed up and we were able to move the tree and continue down the road.

marvelous...how do you spot the Milkyway? do you use an app for that?
          • Joe Lightheart
Thank you, Ontologys Dreamscape! No app. I found the milky way by stopping the car and looked around while all the lights were turned off. There is almost no city light pollution and the skies were very dark since the moon rise was not for another few hours. Once my eyes got used to the darkness the milky way was seen easily.

Thank you very much, Dylan! For this shot I had to drive 40 minutes away! For me that's a long way to go! At the same time, I've always been fascinated that one could go from sea level to 14,000 feet elevation in less than an hour on this island!

Spectacular shot Joe. 25 sec exposure? I will attempt a shot like that one day when I'm out west. You can not see the milky way in the eastern U.S. At least I never have. I was thinking of you when the hurricane was there, hoping all was ok. It's been a tough year in Hawaii. Safe travels on your next adventure.

Thank you Mark! I shot this at several different exposures and was surprised that I did not get too much starry motion even at 25 seconds. If you were to google Mauna Kea observatory you would see that this mountain is famous for astronomical uniqueness with the dark and clear skies needed for research. I had a lot of fun and learned some new stuff too.

Thank you, Cyril! I have an advantage here as this mountain I am on is called Mauna Kea. It is the home to about 13 observatories and telescopes from countries around the world. This location has been determined to be astronomically the best in the Northern Hemisphere as the air is very, very clear and the skies are very, very dark since we are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Thank you Howard. We are in hurricane season till the end of November - the ocean temperatures are warmer, and I know we will have a direct run in sooner than later. The last one was 1992 that caused a lot of damage, se we're due. While I was in Canada there were more than 400 fires, plus they had very warm and dry conditions too.

Thank you, Marius! This was my first time trying this type of shot and am surprised to have gotten something okay even at f/4 - my wides aperture on the lens I had. It helped that I was about 9,000ft/2700+m elevation where the air is very clear. Truly incredible to see so many stars and yes, does make one feel rather insignificant :-)

So every time you leave, the place has an eruption of some sort? You must be like the Ravens at the tower of London.

Never heard of the Ravens at the tower of London so had to look it up, and found it very interesting. First the country wipes them out then has to have a Ravenmaster to ensure their ongoing presence. I don't really matter and Hawaii just seems to have a lot of high spirited earthy activities.
