considering sigma 150-600 or canon EF 400mm f/5.6L

Post by bugseye » Sat Aug 20, 2016 3:36 pm

hello folks,

I'm considering the sigma 150-600 in either the (C) or (S) configuration, some say the (S) is sharper out toward the end of the tele vs. the (C).
any of you folks have any first hand guidance or alternatives i should consider ?

will be for birding and nature when i need some reach

or what about the EF 400mm f/5.6L?

TIA

I use the Canon 70-200 F2.8L USM II its the fastest most portable lens i find and the clarity is so high that you can crop right in

I would buy Contemporary. Smaller, lighter and cheaper. Difference between them in sharpness is not big enough to pay so much more and walk around with heavy lens. Some reviews even say that contemporary is sharper.

I dont know what camera you are using but if it is nikon then you should consider new nikkor 200-500.

I have always preferred primes over zooms, so I am a bit biased, so I say wth the Canon, granted the 400mm 5.6L. Yes, is a bit dated (introduced in the 90s) but I have shot with all 3 variants of Canon's 400mm line up (5.6L, f4DO and 2.8L) and the 5.6 always delivered and it is very light, I loved that lens. I recently sold my version and switched to the 400mm f4 DO and an equally great lens, it does get a bit heavy, at times I still wished I had the f5.6.

Opening up this thread again. Bugseye, which lens choice did you go for? I bought the Canon EF100-400 is ii 18 months ago for wildlife. It is a great lens, albeit a bit hefty, but I'm finding at times I'm still lacking some reach on the small birds. I'm currently considering another of your choices, the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. From reviews I've been reading, it seems a waste of hard earned money for the Sport version. Apparently it's a lot heavier & looks a little bigger, but image sharpness reports say they are almost identical.

Also, does any one else have any first hand experience with the Sigma? Or any other options? Tamron also have a 150-600, but the general consensus seems to be that the Sigma has the edge over it.

Regarding the Tamron Tony, I watched a vid on YT last night with Matt Granger and the new 150-600 with the 1.4 TC and 2.0 TC, 1200 mm on a full frame or 1900 mm on a crop sensor, wouldn't be bad for birding if money was no object. Here's a link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUPaieJrsO4

I went for the Sigma C recently after a lot of research and am happy with it, a big improvement over 120-400. Deciding factors were weight, the 2 zoom locks and the extra reach.

My longest lens is 200mm. I reallyneed to add a proper telephoto amd the sigma 150-500 looks pretty good tbh
