considering sigma 150-600 or canon EF 400mm f/5.6L

Do you have anything specific to say about any cameras or lenses? Or fancy recommending a really good one you have come across? Post in here

Regarding the Tamron Tony, I watched a vid on YT last night with Matt Granger and the new 150-600 with the 1.4 TC and 2.0 TC, 1200 mm on a full frame or 1900 mm on a crop sensor, wouldn't be bad for birding if money was no object. Here's a link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUPaieJrsO4[/quote]

I'm not exactly on any tight budget, nor am I a money no object buyer. But in spending this sort of money, I'd like value for my money. I've just watched the video review & read a few other reviews. I think the Generation 2 Tamron 150-600 is aimed against the Sigma 150-600 Sport perhaps. As it's almost twice the price of Sigma's Contemporary model and Tamron's own generation 1 model. And I still can't see that it gives that much over Sigma's Contemporary model. I think I'm still leaning towards the Sigma at the moment.

Sigma also do a lens & teleconverter package, but I don't think I'll be able to use auto focus with a teleconverter on my Canon 70D. From what I've read, I think with a teleconverter attached, auto focus will only work on the Canon 1 series cameras, not the 2 or 3 series.

Still weighing up my options at the moment.

I have the Sigma 150-600,, the cheaper one and I am quite pleased with it. Actually traded the 150-500 to the 600. Also I have the 1.5 converter so it makes it even longer. Do not get the 2.0 images are not sharp at all

I went to Wex in Norwich today, only to get a camera case for my wife's new camera and came out with the Sigma 150-600 as well. How did that happen? New toy to play with this weekend now. 8-)

Now to decide if I'll sell my EF100-400L MK2.

I accidentally bought the sports version of this the other day (fyi a 105mm filter is bloody expensive) and it's an awesome bit of kit. Feels a bit like walking around wit a bazooka though

I know, I have the Contemporary which only has a 95mm filter. I almost bought a lens protection filter at Wex, they were £95 though. But I didn't, as I work for Canon and get a very useful staff discount on camera gear. But unfortunately, Canon don't seem to do a 95mm filter I've now discovered. So I may have to end up paying the £95 for one after all.

Yes - I saw that it was "Sport" from the exif under photos posted on here ... when you say "accidentally", do you mean you wanted the "C" version? If so (as a "C" version owner) I would say send it back! The "C" is hand-holdable, and fun / useful as such ... but definitely on the limit of hand-holdability. Anything heavier and I would probably be trying to re-purpose a rifle but or something.

I agonized over the choice between Tamron & Sigma... watched & read reviews. Went to the local camera shop and took shots with both lenses. While there may be technical differences between the various models, my thinking is that you can't go wrong with either brand. These lenses are fantastic. I picked the Tamron simply because for a Nikon user the zoom ring turns in the "correct" direction, while for a Canon user the Sigma zoom ring turns in the direction you are used to. I have a bunch of recent photos of herons taken with my Tamron... these shots were taken from a hundred yards away, and at the top of Giant Sequoia trees. (very tall trees). I'm able to take nice shots with minimal cropping, and this makes all the difference. Using my old 70-300 I had to crop far too much, resulting in low quality images.
