Upload warning

Post by JLowPhotos » Tue Jul 20, 2021 3:50 pm

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but I think the warning on the upload page needs to be toughened up a bit as too many people that as they've downloaded an image from either the internet or one of the many free to use download sites that they can post them to the site.

Maybe change the wording from 'Only upload your own photos' to 'Only upload photos you have taken'.

Not sure it would make any difference but will reevaluate on the new site when we get to the upload page

Maybe a click-through, like the "I am not a robot" thinger? "I certify that these are my own photos."

I agree, it probably won't do much good, but maybe?

A bit late with a comment, but that is not such a bad idea. If nothing else it would negate any "I didn't realise" defence when they are caught out.

Agreed, I've suggested before a tick box confirmation that these are your own images when uploading. I have seen that on other sites. I acknowledge that anyone can tick a box but it does reinforce the issue and no one could claim ignorance after that.

Taken from a stock site? ;)

Only upload photos you own the copyright to?

Snag is that any upload warning or tick box is open to abuse and there is no way to stop it without every upload being moderator approved before it appears on the site which is not possible.

What might help a lot and would be simple to realize is to check for exif data. Screenshots and stolen pics most likely do not have that info.

Only problem is that most of my images don't have it either as I edit them so the exif info is lost when I save the new version.

I have seen stock images with all EXIF data intact. But it would weed out some.

As an aside, let us hope that the new system will show the EXIF data again, and correct it on all those photos that were "attacked" in Oct 2020 to state that they were taken by a Samsung phone...

Interesting. My editing software keeps all the exif data intact.
