Biography

I’m an amateur photographer who lives in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire: I enjoy photographing the countryside near where I live. Although I’ve had a camera for 50 years or so it’s only in the last few years that I’ve taken photography a little more seriously but only a little, I still enjoy the process. Thanks.

YouTube channels I subscribe to that help me with my photography: Thomas Heaton, Simon Baxter, Serge Ramelli, Phillip McCordall who I can’t recommend highly enough, Paul G. Johnson, Mujahid, First Man Photography and of course, Mike Browne. Others that I watch on an occasional basis: Gavin Hoey and Kelvin Designs.

photogenic man...i want to experiment with self portraits this winter...is it difficult to fokus the eyes or is the automatic eye detection really helpful?
        • vernhagl
I never used eye detection, maybe something to consider in the future. I usually look straight into the lens, do the focus, then tilt my head the way I think is right. Best results achieved with short lenses between 20 to 50mm on an APSC-sensor.

I manual focus all the time but sometimes during portrait shoots i use eye detection ... it takes away lots of work so you are free to compose...

As I've commented before you are photogenic and have such a characterful face. Is "Last Day of Summer" a metaphor? Nice image.

I actually took the picture at the last day of this summer, was a bit melancholic. As always thanks for commenting.

Not knowing old maps, I'd say it's a typo. I actually thought you made this sign up and was trying to understand your humor - now I see it's not your created sign and see no humor within :) The stars and sky color have an excellent effect.

Thanks. For once no jokes: it is 7 miles from Huddersfield and 6 and 1/2 to Woodhead although I don't think there's much left at Woodhead.

Very nice shot! Love the colors and the old miles markers. I've seen that before on very old maps, with the letter s written as an f. Thought the same thing.

Its location was probably a planning requirement by English Heritage. I guess that the builder's first choice would have displaced a family of newts or trampled on a few flowers.

If the world ain't flat, how come when you stand on a beach and look out to sea the horizon is dead straight? Shouldn't it be curved? Get outta that one in 30 words or less!! ;-)

I've never been to Tasmania so I can't say, but I highly recommend New Zealand. I stayed at Airbnbs and many times with only hours of prior notice and had zero problems with places to stay. The next time I go I might hire a camper style van and do more camping. There's really good places and apps for locations too. I spent most of my time on the southern island - it's a lot less populated. New Zealand is fantastic, wonderful people great places to hike, etc., etc. Can't go wrong with New Zealand! I also went right after peak season so was better, less crowds, less people and not as expensive.

Nice thanks for the info...we tried to go to the Island by ferry but you cant bring a dog cause of quarantine... it's going to be Norway first now...and I bought new equipment so New Zealand is going to be on hold for a while but I totally looking forward to it :)

I'm a night owl, so an early riser I am not. I figure 2 chances for beautiful skies. Sunrise and sunset. So I prefer to try shooting the sunsets although I haven't shot many of those. However, I am very happy you are getting up early to catch the beautiful sunrises you see. I do believe there are advantages, photographically, to sunrises over sunsets. Calm water being one of them. Your sunrise photos are stunning!!!!

Most of my 15 years as a lorry driver was spent doing nights, so I saw a lot of dawns from the cozy confines of a truck cab. Since leaving that life, I seldom see them. Only under extreme protest will I drag my arse out of bed for one.

Thank you, Ontologys Dreamscape! No app. I found the milky way by stopping the car and looked around while all the lights were turned off. There is almost no city light pollution and the skies were very dark since the moon rise was not for another few hours. Once my eyes got used to the darkness the milky way was seen easily.

Spectacular shot Joe. 25 sec exposure? I will attempt a shot like that one day when I'm out west. You can not see the milky way in the eastern U.S. At least I never have. I was thinking of you when the hurricane was there, hoping all was ok. It's been a tough year in Hawaii. Safe travels on your next adventure.

Thank you Mark! I shot this at several different exposures and was surprised that I did not get too much starry motion even at 25 seconds. If you were to google Mauna Kea observatory you would see that this mountain is famous for astronomical uniqueness with the dark and clear skies needed for research. I had a lot of fun and learned some new stuff too.

Thank you, Cyril! I have an advantage here as this mountain I am on is called Mauna Kea. It is the home to about 13 observatories and telescopes from countries around the world. This location has been determined to be astronomically the best in the Northern Hemisphere as the air is very, very clear and the skies are very, very dark since we are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Thank you Howard. We are in hurricane season till the end of November - the ocean temperatures are warmer, and I know we will have a direct run in sooner than later. The last one was 1992 that caused a lot of damage, se we're due. While I was in Canada there were more than 400 fires, plus they had very warm and dry conditions too.

Thank you, Marius! This was my first time trying this type of shot and am surprised to have gotten something okay even at f/4 - my wides aperture on the lens I had. It helped that I was about 9,000ft/2700+m elevation where the air is very clear. Truly incredible to see so many stars and yes, does make one feel rather insignificant :-)

Never heard of the Ravens at the tower of London so had to look it up, and found it very interesting. First the country wipes them out then has to have a Ravenmaster to ensure their ongoing presence. I don't really matter and Hawaii just seems to have a lot of high spirited earthy activities.
