Yakka

The Xanthorrhoea, commonly known as the grasstree, Balga or Yakka is a flowering plant native to Australia. This is what's left after the seeds have dispersed from the flower spike. These are growing wild in our yard. Not the most attractive plant but fascinating all the same!

Yakka, I've learnt something new. In WA around Perth, they are balga.

I only knew them as 'black boys' which is now not used so I had to google that & good old Wikipedia came up with the yakka & other names lol. I think It depends on where you are as to what they're known as. It did mention Balga :)

Yes - we grew up with black boys too. Now we tend to use grass trees. I'm also not surprised they would have so many names from around the traps. Each language group would have their word for them. They are incredibly fascinating plants regardless of what they can be called.

I couldn't remember the grass tree name (mind blank - not uncommon!) The guy who lives behind us has heaps on his place I will have to go up there one day with my camera - he's an old 'Camera House' owner so he might give me some photography tips while I'm going :0
