Turtle Courtship - 5387

UPDATE: Based on the comment by GarySibio I did some research and things were not as I saw them originally. This is in fact a large female and a small male Painted turtle. As the breeding season starts the smaller male swims around the larger female with the claws on his feet spread out trying to get her attention. Therefore, I have changed the name of this photo from "Turtle Parenting" to "Turtle Courtship".
Below is my initial incorrect interpretation of what I was observing:
A young Painted Turtle sticks close to it's parent. When the big turtle would dive the little one would follow. Whatever the big one did the little one would copy the motion. There were several of these parent and youngster turtle pairs in the area of the dock where I was standing. These two where the most photogenic.

Great picture and perfect timing. I don't think this is mother and child. In this species the mother lays the eggs and that's the end of her job. She has nothing further to do with the kids. Despite the size difference, the females can be huge, it's more likely a mating pair.

Gary, I just finished updating my title and comment on this photo. I just finished reading an article on Painted Turtle behavior that described what I was seeing. You are absolutely right in your observation and I was absolutely wrong in interpreting what I was seeing. Thanks again for your comment and putting me on the right path.

Great moment there, Butch, and very photogenic subjects who seem to float in space. Did you use a polarizing filter, or was it a shady area?

It was just before sunset and the sun was real low and these turtles where in the shadow of the dark. So they were kept free of glare without having to use a filter. When I first saw the photo I thought it looked like the turtles were floating in outer space.
