Up in smoke 1

Notre-Dame cathedral ablaze. Dinner was almost ready but some shred of a photo-journalistic fibre in me sent me off to have a look. None of the usual transport was available so I walked the 25 minutes to get there (and back). Cordoned off, naturally, and a dense crowd but I managed to peek through for a few shots. It was under renovation at the time and it seems that area is where it started. Oak-frame structure. The spire has collapsed. Not the 1st time - it was dismantled during the French Revolution then rebuilt in the 19th C. I'll stop here as you'll get more from your TV set ...

OOPS! It's like when Windsor Castle went up in smoke. That was blamed on workmen doing restoration work.

Seems the most plausible for the moment since the flames took in the upper wooden framework, where restoration was underway. The stone part of the structure can surely be restored but they're not yet sure how badly the marble was damaged ...

Sad, but everything can be restored.

Certainly much of it can, but one expert was asked: 'Can it all be restored like it was before," He answered: "Impossible." We'll see.

So sad. Thanks for the photo. From what I saw on the TV news there doesn't look much left. I dread to think what it will look like in the morning.

They're now saying the 'essence' of the structure is preserved - whatever that means ...
