Limpkin Carries a Shell to the Shore - 1884

Limpkin feeding in a creek that flows from a lake. The Limpkin was in very shallow water feeding on small snails and what it found in shells. Sometimes it would stick its head under water, grab a shell, bring it to the bank and break it apart to get what was in it. I rarely see these birds and also just see a single bird, never a flock. It has been about four years since I have seen one. Like too many birds, the Limpkin was hunted to near extinction in Florida by the early 20th century. and its current comeback status is listed as fair at this time. It is widespread in the American tropics, but enters our area only in Florida and southern Georgia -- only where it can satisfy its dietary requirement for a certain freshwater snail.
