Hand Ferry at Symonds Yat

The hand-pulled ferry at Symonds Yat, operated by the Saracens Head Hotel in this idyllic area of the Wye Valley. One of two hand-pulled ferries on this stretch it links East and West Symonds Yat, and although it may look like a tourist attraction alone it serves a purpose to get across the river and has done since the 1800's. Its is thought that these ferries were introduced in Roman times to link the forts of Doward and Yat, since then used for military, tourist, horse and civilian traffic.
