Crescent

This is the Crescent Nebula in Cygnus, imaged in narrowband on 7-8 October 2019. It's a cloud of dust being shed by a dying star; the radiation of the star is still hot enough to make the dust incandescent. By the standard of stars, these nebulae are very short-lived - it will disperse over the next 10-20,000 years. Much of the dust that ultimately coalesces to form planets originates from events like this - everything on this world, including ourselves, is ultimately made of stardust.
