Snowdonia slate mine

Snowdonia offers the curious and perhaps challenging juxtaposition of the most beautiful, almost brooding mountain scenery with the ugliest of open-cast mining of dark grey slate, of which the Snowdonia mountains are made. We drove through the village of Blaenau Ffestiniog where the long-abandoned slate workings are the worst kind of blight on the landscape, unless you can attach some romance to the idea of generations of slate workers living their neighbourly, meaningful existences there, with the men, perhaps, singing as only the Welsh Male Voice Choirs can sing, the heart-stirring “Men of Harlech” military march and Welsh folk love songs and anthems.
