Biography

Amateur photographer. I have been at it for about 10+ years. I love the digital world as it allows us amateurs the opportunity to get a good shot without going broke on film. I enjoy taking pictures of almost anything but landscapes I would say are my favorite. I would love your thoughts and any opinions that will help me to improve.

Thank you very much and thank you very much for sharing. I appreciate both the comment and the share. The lens I used for the Hummingbirds is a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary. I gets a little iffy at the max 600mm but below that I am extremely pleased with the results of that lens.

Thank you for the info! That is an interesting lens, indeed, one I do think about getting in the future. But first an ultra-wide lens is a must for me ...

I usually only get to get a photo of them when in Arizona. Not real plentiful around my area in Florida. What I do is set up with a tripod with a ball head and keep it a bit loose so I can move it around. Then I manually focus on the Hummingbird feeder they feed from. I shoot in aperture priority and set the aperture to get a good depth of field (that way I can get some level of decent focus). I set the ISO high enough so I can set the shutter speed to 1/2000 or better. Now the reason I only do this is when I visit Arizona is because there is a much bigger Hummingbird population there and the feeder gets very busy especially in the morning. Hummingbirds have to eat about every 15 minutes because of the way they expend energy. All those things add up to pretty good odds of getting a bird in flight coming to or leaving from the feeder. And, every once and a while one will land on a near by bush. If I tried this approach in Florida where I only see Hummingbirds once in a while I'll spend months wait for one shot.

Thank you for the additional information, understand fully about going to where the birds are more common/bigger populations. It is something I have to do myself with certain species. Also good to read how you set up your camera, I tend to shoot in manual with auto ISO

This is from when I was visiting in Arizona. Every day the Hummingbirds would be around the feeder all day. The problem was they moved to fast to get a good photo. So what I did was set the camera on a tripod, manually focus on the bird feeder, set a depth of field that would get what wanted, raise the ISO to make sure I could get a fast shutter speed (1/2000 or better) and then when a Hummingbird would fly in try to get 2 or three shots while it approached or left the feeder. While we have Hummingbirds here in Florida I could never do this here because we only see at most one or two a day where as in Arizona there were a large number so not a long wait between photos. Happy you enjoy the photos.

I just saw the 3rd one which is beautiful. But I agree, this is my favorite due to the way the sky looks and the sunlight shining through the tree and fence drawing lines in the grass is extra cool.

Interesting the stars can be seen in this photo. I assume the moon was full or near full. I don't see many stars here when the moon is bright. Is it a case of the camera capturing what the eye doesn't see?

I was using the Sony a73 and with the IBIS it was pretty easy-- Not sure if you saw some of my comments on the new Sony-- did not like the EVF in the daytime but at night it was very good. colors are a little less intense then my Canon 6D especially in the yellow and red areas-- not bad just different
        • Joe Lightheart
I saw the comments but have no experience with Sony so I didn't pay much attention except to think my Fuji X-T2 has a wonderful EVF. I do like the naturally warmer tones that Canon has versus when I shot with my Nikon. At this point in time I switched from Nikon full frame to Fuji mirrorless and am pleased with the loss of weight and bulk over the FF Nikon and lenses. Not so sure FF is needed any more. Lots of choices, eh?
