Copley Valley Viaducts

There are 3 railway viaducts that cross the River Calder at Copley, West Yorkshire, 2 of which can be seen in this picture taken from Norland.

The smaller 3 arch Manchester and Leeds Railway Viaduct was built by George Stephenson and opened in 1840, and has remained in use since. The passengers services that crossed the viaduct were scrapped in 1970, aside from the occasional diverted service and the line became a freight route that survived a number of attempts to close it before Brighouse Station reopened in 2000 and passenger trains regularly crossed the River again.

The 23 arch Copley Viaduct is the much more well known crossing, it passes over the River Calder, Calder & Hebble Navigation and A6026 Wakefield Road whilst crossing the Copley Valley. Opened in 1852 it became the first direct link between Sowerby Bridge and Halifax Stations, as before this date trains reversed up via a branch line from Greetland Station. www.colingreenphotography.co.uk
