Biography

Random Imaginationing I have always loved photography and particularly enjoy shooting nature - while hiking, kayaking & camping... Long time Pentax shooter - K1000, K7 & K3... I love telling a story - capturing the story in a single frame or a series and sharing it. I've always had a camera as far back as I can remember, but my first SLR was a Pentax K1000 - now shooting K7 & K3... and still shooting b/w film on the k1000 and an Exakta VX! I have been trying to get images of this little guy's parents to no avail, but he was very cooperative... This Northern Red Cardinal is the son of a mated pair that live in our yard and we see frequently at our feeders and in our birdbaths... They are beautiful red (technically the female is actually a bit more orange and tan I suppose)...

Male Northern Cardinal in my backyard in Plainfield, IL on pole hook holding platform bird feeder... was very brave - allowed me to take several minutes of photos from a distance of about 8' with large lens.

I have been trying to capture a snap of this little guy for FOREVER and finally did - I think he just took pity on me as I'd been sitting in the rain for some time waiting for a good shot of ANY bird and for the first time EVER this little guy perched and sat still for more than a nano-second while I snapped this photo of him in front of our covered grill and on one of the lamps around our patio. MY wife and I have agreed that he is my father-in-law tormenting me by not allowing me to get a good photo of him.

Beautiful photo. Great detail. Nicely done. Cardinals love sunflower seeds and if they are nesting anywhere near they will stop by every day to grab a few.

Thanks! I have noticed the female (who is much less twitchy than the male) spends some time in the feeder box digging through the seeds - maybe she is looking for the sunflower seeds in the mix... The male spends much less time at the feeder - I'm guessing what to me appears as 'more twitchy' is simply due to him being the protector and always on alert.

A lot of times one of the two will sit in a tree nearby while the other eats. But, every once in a while I will see them both there at the same time. You are right the males spook easier than the females. Cardinals keep the same mate and unless the weather turns cold they will stay around for a long time. They are fun to watch.

I was wandering around taking photos of animals at Brookfield Zoo in Illinois... bison... zebra... toad... etc... and suddenly looked down and there were there lovely little unassuming mushrooms... just patiently awaiting their turn to be photographed. "I'm ready for my close up, Mr. Demille."
