Hey Phil, thank you very much. I'm always reminding myself that a popular picture does not mean a good picture. Sadly, it's a silly popularity contest more than quality images.
                • eddiem
Joe, I am with Phil all the way on this. Your page is full of quality probably one of the best on here.

CAS is what it is if you choose to play the game then that is fine, but its up too you. Personally it is about quality not quantity and I hope that comes across. But everyone's vision of what makes a great image is different and I believe we show that in the people we follow and the images we like.

Lets get this right, none of us are going to become millionaires on CAS, so why are we here?

We all have differing reasons but I like to see what others are into and explore their views and mind set.

Back to this image, I said I loved it and I do. You have a great eye for the composition others my not have seen this while standing deciding what to shoot.

Give yourself a pat on the back instead of beating yourself up

                  Best Eddie

Thank you so much, Eddie! I appreciate you taking your time and sharing your views and ideas with me. Thank you for complimenting me and my pictures. I wish I could see them as others do, but I don't. As I mentioned to Phil one of my reasons for being on CAS is for my pictures to be seen. I play the game because I don't know another way to have my pictures viewed. I made the comment to Phil that popular does not mean good since that is where he saw my picture. Popular means we play the game :) Thanks again, Eddie and I've given myself a pat on my back! Cheers!

Joe a few observations on your comment. First, don't underestimate how good your images actually are and, for me, this one is up there with the best of them. I also enjoy seeing your posts when you're using your talents other than at sunrise and sunset and would enjoy seeing more. I'm not sure I'd define CAS as a "popularity contest" but the way it's set up encourages "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" behaviour irrespective of image quality. I'm also wary of making comments on other peoples photos because of a bad experience elsewhere when the reaction to something I posted to be constructive received a really negative and hostile reaction. Personally I post stuff which i like and if others do too then that's great if not, then so be it - as I'm sure I'll see with some of my upcoming posts from Venice over the next short while. I also don't underestimate the "power of the like" as explained by Clay Enos - can recommend the following video of his on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_nraK6ulA4. Anyway, apologies for all the "ramblings". Come the day we ever make it out to Hawaii I'll look you up! Kind regards, Phil

Thank you very much for taking your time to share your thoughts with me. As for my pictures, thank you for your compliment and I know that I do not see them as others do. I know they are not bad and a couple I would consider good, and overall I think they are okay. Your view of CAS as "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" behavior irrespective of image quality hits the nail on the head and is more accurate than my popularity contest idea. I admit I do this with the understanding that this is how I can get my pictures seen. I don't know how else to get them seen, and one of my reasons for being on CAS is for my pictures to be seen. I wish I could think of another way. I see that there are some remarkable photographers with consistently amazing images on CAS and their views numbers are very low. I think it's because they do not do the scratch mine-yours behavior and the result is their pictures are not seen. This is why I commented about popular does not mean good. Popular means we play the game of scratch me-I'll scratch you. My other reasons for being on CAS is to see pictures from all over the world and to interact with the people that take these pictures. Thanks again, Phil

G'day Joe! Just weighing in with my 3 cents (inflation), yes, CAS and other photo-sharing sites are a social game, but the back-scratching is voluntary. I have been part of two online photo competition sites, one is simply too large now to bother, and the other one frustrates me to no end how people continue to submit off-brief photos knowing that the Crowd, who rates most contests – there are some with Judges and Experts, but some of the Judges even do not follow their own brief or, going by their own portfolio, do not have the qualifications to judge other people's photographs – will rate them favourably as long as there is a pretty sunset in it. That just being a term encompassing many common popular "effects". The next issue is that the same photos are entered over and over again to show to everybody just how successful a photographer took them, whilst I take the approach to treat each contest as a challenge to either go out and find a shot (within Sydney confines), or look at my collection and advance that a bit with processing and keywording. I treat the competitions the as if they were the type where there is a live performer, e. g. a sports or musical event, who cannot simply say "Here is a video of how successfully I performed last time, I am not actually going to compete today." – This approach helps me to look at different aspects of photography, i.e. I use the competitions as prompts for a challenge to create something that I would not have considered myself, and/or not in the time frame. And if one of the creations reaches glory level (I do have a few repeat entries...), it will be retired. One of these retirement posts, also for the ones that will never reach glory level, has become CAS, and one benefit for me is that at the same time I have enjoyed seeing different high-calibre photographers' work on here, without any sunsets required to make a photo successful, which sadly does not always mean appreciated, too. Another good thing on a site like this is that one can create photos for art's sake, i.e. add filters and textures, without cries of foul play. One either likes the image or not. – This is more like 5 cents' worth... By the way, I am so far down in the rankings on the photo contest site that in my desperation I entered two sunset photos into a sunset contest... Keep up the good work, Joe, your work IS appreciated. Cheers, Irene PS: Someone once said "The right time to take a vertical photo is right after you have taken a horizontal photo", and I follow that advice quite often. It is easy to hit the delete button later.

Thank you very much, Joanne-looks cute and has pretty colours, but is quite aggressive with anything it's size and smaller. An excellent bug killer too! Thank you very much for sharing!

So beautiful! I love the way the shadows hit the wall and the reeds! Amazing!

Thanks for the share Sonya. No special set up here just my bathroom. Didn't realise it would look like this until summer rolled around!

Thank you. It does look amazing when you walk into the bathroom & see the patterns the blinds create. No 'fake' setups in this shot lol

Thanks. It is lovely to see the sun in there but it's bloody hot as it's in summer (I'm in Oz)!!!
